Guide Review - SpongeBob Atlantis SquarePantis DVD
Atlantis SquarePantis seemed epic in scope, much like Dunces and Dragons (Lost in Time). SpongeBob finds the missing half of an anicent relic that, when reunited with the half kept in the Bikini Bottom museum, leads the gang to the lost city of Atlantis. Atlantis is much like Oz; each member of the party finds their dreams fulfilled. And Atlantis is ruled by none other than David Bowie playing Lord Royal Highness.
Here and there were funny moments, mainly involving SpongeBob and Patrick and the oldest living bubble. Occasionally Squidward's superiority and thrill with the Atlanteans wonderful art provided laughs. But other than that, the clever wackiness of Where's Gary? and the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was missing.
The musical numbers were dull. And here's a head scratcher: David Bowie guest stars, but doesn't sing. I watched the entire show waiting for Lord Royal Highness to break into song, only to be left wanting.
The other episodes included on the DVD are of the same ilk. "Slimy Dancing" is pretty good, having SpongeBob show up Squidward during dance practice. "Picture Day" is also pretty funny, but I'm a sucker for anything involving SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff's Boating School.
Children, and possibly teens, won't mind (or even notice) the lack of silly but clever humor, but I sure did.
