Guide Review - The Simpsons Movie
The plot revolves around environmental concerns and our government. The Simpsons Movie even dares to elect Arnold Schwarzenegger as President, rather than a no-name character. The Simpsons used to be known for tackling prickly topics like global warming and secret government tactics, and the film reminds us of those early days with a shrewd and cutting look at these current topics.
But I would have liked to have seen something really surprising, not so predictable, for the price of admission to The Simpsons Movie. This plot easily could have been inserted into any 22 minute episode. In fact, there's a brief scene when the town's representatives appeal to Mr. Burns for power, and I was reminded of "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
Speaking of Mr. Burns, my favorite characters were used far too sparingly. I didn't need new characters like Colin, the boy Lisa falls for, or Russ Cargill (Albert Brooks), the evil head of the EPA. Yes, Grampa, Chief Wiggum and Flanders had some nice scenes, but we barely glimpsed Krabappel, Skinner, Moe, Barney, the Comic Book Guy and so many more. Why create a new villain when Mr. Burns is such a wonderful one?
Overall, fans will be pleased. I certainly was. I laughed a lot and enjoyed watching the world of The Simpsons spread out a bit. And Maggie, one of my favorite characters, has some important moments. But next time, let Springfield folks shine and leave the new guys at home.
